Wellington is one of the most fickle places in New Zealand when it comes to weather! In a typical day, you can have rain, sun, wind and calm... freezing and hot! The average temperatures over summer (the main flyfishing season) are around 20 degrees. The temperatures in the central North Island lakes and rivers can drop to 0 degrees at any time of the year... and frequently do!
We certainly can't guarantee you'll catch a fish, but we do promise you'll have a great time and see some magnificent scenery along the way! The trout in the Wellington region headwater fisheries are on average, larger than the rest of New Zealand, but numbers are much fewer.
Lowland trout in and around the Wellington / Wairarapa region average 2lbs to 3.5lbs. The trout in the headwaters of the Tararua Range's average 4lbs to 6.5lbs and quite often fish up to 8lbs will be encounted, especially late in the season when Cicada's are normally prolific. During a 'Beech Seed' year when the mice are in a breeding frenzy, we have caught and released browns up to 13lbs. But fish like this are relatively rare in the Wellington region.
We practice catch and release unless of course you catch that fish of a lifetime to have mounted and hung on your wall!
For trips in the central North Island, we have a partnership with Horty's Smokehouse in Turangi. We certainly encourage keeping the occasional fish in these prolific waters for smoking, and Horty can arrange smoking, vaccum packing and sending your fish overseas.
